Housing Adaptation Grants:
Introduction
Housing Adaptation grants are schemes created by local Authorities all over Ireland to help the elderly and
disabled people change their home environment to one that is safe and more accessible.
There are different Housing Adaptation Grants available assist in the carrying out of works which are reasonably
necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable. Depending on the individual and the work to be
done a suitable grant can be identified for the applicant and applied for.
The types of works allowable under the scheme include the provision of grab rails, access ramps, downstairs toilet
facilities, stair lifts, accessible showers, adaptations to facilitate wheelchair access, and any other works which are reasonably necessary for the purposes of rendering a house more suitable.
There are two main grants available...
1. Mobility Aids Grant Scheme:
The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme provides grants for works designed to address mobility problems in the home,
such as the purchase and installation of a grab rail, level access shower, access ramp or stairlift.
The scheme is primarily for older people, but people with a disability can also apply for it.
Works Covered By Scheme:

Notes:
The maximum grant available is €6,000, which may cover 100% of the cost of the work.
This scheme is fast tracked for faster processing.

2. Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability
A housing adaptation grant is available where changes need to be made to a home to make it suitable
for a person with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability or mental health difficulty to live in. The grant can
help you to make changes and adaptations to your home, for example, making it wheelchair-accessible, extending it to create more space, adding a ground-floor bathroom or toilet or a stair-lift.

Notes:
The maximum grant available is €30,000, which may cover 95% of the cost of the work.
This scheme is not fast tracked.
